Emma-Kate Wilson is an emerging arts writer based in Sydney.
Wilson specialises in interviews, reviews, features, and theoretical art essays. Through her practice, she examines the Everyday and connection to life through its banality and extraordinary elements. What will the earth look like in 30 years or so, and how do contemporary artists respond to the politics of our time? Emma-Kate has interviewed and reviewed artists who use their art to question identity politics, sexism, environmental issues, or merely the way we navigate through living in a world of over communication.
Originally from the UK, Wilson moved to Australia in 2013 for sunnier weather and stayed for the incredible nature and a mix of large galleries and emerging art scene. After volunteering at a small gallery in The Rocks, she decided to study Art Theory as to fully immerse herself in the context of art in the Asia-Pacific region. Unlike studying art in Europe, art created in this region is inherently political due to the effects of colonisation. The layers of art run deep into the soul of Australia, and the result of settlers and diverse migration has created conflict which contemporary artists balance to tell histories and stories. In her art writing, Wilson sets out to dismantle traditional structures, speaking to different dialogues, and opening the conversation. To break the effects of tokenism a writer or artist has to listen, observe, and research to create a discourse that fundamentally is wanted; rather than to sensationalise for her gain.
